Galina Ivanovna Sybina ( Russian : Галина Ивановна Зыбина, born January 22, 1931 in Leningrad ) is a former Soviet athlete and Olympic champion. With a height of 1.68 m, she had a competition weight of 80 kg.

Galina Ivanovna Sybina won medals in shot put , discus throw and javelin throw between 1950 and 1964 . She was the first female shot putter to push past the 16-meter mark.

Career

At the European Championships in 1950 , Galina Sybina won bronze in the javelin throw behind Natalja Smirnizkaja from the Soviet Union and Herma Bauma from Austria with 42.75 m . In the shot put Sybina was fourth with 13.07 m, she was 30 centimeters behind the French Micheline Ostermeyer in third place.

At the first Olympic appearance of the Soviet team at the Olympic Games in Helsinki in 1952 , the shot put was dominated by the Soviet pushers. Galina Sybina won gold with a new world record of 15.28 m ahead of Marianne Werner from the Federal Republic of Germany. Klawdija Totschonowa won bronze with 14.50 m and Tamara Tyschkewitsch was fourth with 14.42 m. In the javelin throw, Galina Sybina was fourth with 48.35 m, but was more than a meter behind the medal ranks.

At the European Championships in 1954 , Galina Sybina won the shot put with 15.65 m before Marija Kuznetsova with 14.99 m and Tamara Tyschkewitsch with 14.78 m. There was also a triple success for the Soviet Union in the discus throw. Sybina won bronze with 44.74 m behind Nina Ponomarjowa with 48.02 m and Irina Begljakowa with 45.79 m.

Before the Olympic Games in 1956 , Galina Sybina set the world record in the shot put at 16.76 m. In Melbourne Tamara Tyschkewitsch won the qualification ahead of Marianne Werner and Galina Sybina, who came to 14.08 m. In the final, which took place on November 30th like the qualification, Galina Sybina improved her own Olympic record from Helsinki three times, the last attempt landed at 16.53 m. Tamara Tyschkewitsch hit 16.59 m in the last attempt and won gold in front of Sybina and Werner (15.61 m).

After a seventh place at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome with 15.56 m, Galina Sybina again won a medal at the 1962 European Championships . Behind the Ukrainian Tamara Press , who won gold for the Soviet Union with a world record of 18.55 m, and Renate Garisch from the GDR with 17.17 m, Sybina received bronze with 16.95 m.

The same medal distribution was also found at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo . Tamara Press won with 18.14 m ahead of Renate Garisch with 17.61 m and Galina Sybina with 17.45 m.

Galina Sybina had her last major international appearance at the European Championships in 1966 . It won Nadezhda Tschischowa with 17.22 m before the two DDR-poking gutters margitta gummel with 17.05 m and Marita Lange meters with 16.96. Galina Sybina was fourth with 16.65 m.
