Mason Finley (born October 7, 1990 in Kansas City , Missouri ) is an American discus thrower and shot putter .

Life

Mason Finley was born in Kansas City , Missouri . He went to high school in Buena Vista , Colorado and then attended the University of Kansas before moving to the University of Wyoming . In late 2009, Finley was named High School Track & Field Team of the Decade by ESPN magazine Rise and was named High School Athlete of the Year by track & field news magazine .

At the Pan American Junior Athletics Championships 2009 in Port of Spain , Trinidad and Tobago , Finley won the gold medal in both the shot put with a personal best of 20.36 m ahead of Jordan Clarke and Tim Nedow and in the discus throw with a personal best of 65.34 m ahead of Quincy Wilson and Traves Smikle the gold medal. Two years later, Finley won the bronze medal behind O'Dayne Richards and Soslan Tsirikhov at the 2011 Summer Universiade in Shenzhen, China, in the shot put with a distance of 19.72 m .

At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , Finley finished eleventh in the discus throw after finishing sixth in the qualification in the final with a width of only 62.05 m.

At the 2017 World Championships in London , Finley surprisingly won the bronze medal in the discus final with a personal best of 68.03 m behind Andrius Gudžius and Daniel Ståhl . As a result, he improved from 17th to fourth in the world's annual best list.

In 2016 and 2017 Finley also became the American discus thrower.
