O'Dayne Richards (born December 14, 1988 in Saint Andrew Parish ) is a Jamaican shot putter .

Athletic career

O'Dayne Richards gained his first international experience at the U23 NACAC Championships 2010 in Miramar , where he won the bronze medal with 18.03 m. Then he won the Central American and Caribbean Games (CAC) in Mayagüez with 18.74 m, the silver medal behind his compatriot Dorian Scott . He also finished fourth in the discus throw with 54.10 m. The following year he won the Central American and Caribbean Championships there with 19.16 m and the Summer Universiade in Shenzhen with 19.93 m. In the discus throw he was eliminated with 47.46 m in qualification. Two years later he won gold again at the CAC Championships in Morelia with 20.97 m and was eliminated from the qualification at the World Championships in Moscow with 19.08 m.

In 2014 he took part in the World Indoor Championships in Sopot , Poland , and failed with 19.77 m in qualification. He then won the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with 21.61 m ahead of New Zealander Tomas Walsh and came second at the Continental Cup in Marrakech . In 2015, he triumphed at the Pan American Games in Toronto with 21.69 m ahead of Canadian Tim Nedow and thus qualified for the World Championships in Beijing , where he surprisingly won the bronze medal with 21.69 m in the final . In 2016 he took part in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro for the first time and finished eighth there in the final with 20.64 m.

In 2017 he again took part in the World Championships in London , but this time failed with 19.95 m in qualification . In 2018 he finished eleventh at the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham with 19.93 m and was fourth at the Commonwealth Games in the Australian Gold Coast in early April with 20.80 m. He then won the gold medal at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Barranquilla with 21.02 m in front of his compatriot Ashinia Miller .

Between 2013 and 2018, Richards became the Jamaican Shot Put Champion every year. He is a graduate of the University of Technology in Jamaica.
