Traves Jamie Smikle (born May 7, 1992 in Kingston ) is a Jamaican discus thrower .

Athletic career

Traves Smikle gained his first international experience at the 2009 Youth World Championships in Bressanone , where he won the bronze medal with 61.22 m, as well as at the Pan-American Junior Championships in Port of Spain with 57.18 m a few weeks later. At the CARIFTA Games 2010 in George Town he won bronze again with 58.24 m and also at the Central America and Caribbean Games (CAC) in Santo Domingo he was third with 57.20 m. He then took part in the Junior World Championships in Moncton , Canada , where he finished seventh with 59.59 m. At the CARIFTA Games 2011 in Montego Bay , he won the silver medal in the shot put with 18.58 m and gold in the discus throw with 62.84 m. Then he also won the Pan American Junior Championships in Miramar with a new championship record of 66.58 m.

In 2012, Smikle won the gold medal at the U23 NACAC Championships in Irapuato with 62.11 m and also qualified for the Olympic Games in London , where he was eliminated with 61.85 m in the qualifying round. In 2013 he originally took part in the Summer Universiade in Kazan , but was subsequently disqualified. Shortly thereafter, it was tested for an unpublished banned substance and then banned until 2015. In 2017, he qualified for the first time for the World Championships in London, where he finished eighth in the final with 64.04 m. In 2018 he took part in the Commonwealth Games in the Australian Gold Coast for the first time , winning the silver medal with 63.98 m behind his compatriot Fedrick Dacres and ahead of the Cypriot Apostolos Parellis . He then won the bronze medal at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Barranquilla with 64.68 m and the silver medal behind Dacres at the NACAC Championships in Toronto with 65.46 m. At the Pan American Games in Lima in 2019 , he won the silver medal with 65.02 m.

In 2011, 2012 and 2019, Smikle was the Jamaican champion in discus throw.
