Apostolos Parellis ( Greek Απόστολος Παρέλλης ; born July 24, 1985 in Limassol ) is a Cypriot discus thrower .

Athletic career

Apostolos Parellis gained his first international experience at the U23 European Championships 2007 in Debrecen , where he won the bronze medal with a national record of 58.16 m. He then took part in the Summer Universiade in Bangkok and was eliminated there with 54.53 m in qualification. Two years later he won the gold medal at the Games of the Small States of Europe (GSSE) in Nicosia and finished seventh at the Mediterranean Games in Pescara with 60.12 m. He then took part again in the Student World Games in Belgrade , where he finished sixth with 61.07 m. In 2010 he was eliminated at the European Championships in Barcelona with 60.57 m in qualification and was fourth at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi with 60.51 m.

In 2011 he won the gold medal again at the GSSE in Schaan with 60.55 m and took sixth place at the Summer Universiade in Shenzhen with 61.44 m. In 2012 he again took part in the European Championships in Helsinki , but retired there with 61.79 m in qualification, as well as at the Olympic Games in London , where 63.48 m were just short of a place in the final . At the GSSE in Luxembourg in 2013 he had to admit defeat to the Montenegrin Danijel Furtula with 59.11 m and won silver. At the Mediterranean Games in Mersin , Turkey , he finished seventh with 59.70 m and qualified for the World Championships in Moscow , where he also did not reach the final with 59.84 m. In 2014 he won silver at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with 63.32 m behind the Indian Vikas Gowda and failed again in the preliminary round at the European Championships in Zurich with 60.32 m.

In 2015 he reached the final of the World Championships in Beijing , where he finished sixth with 64.55 m. At the European Championships in Amsterdam in 2016 he did not reach the final again, but qualified again for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , where he finished eighth with 63.72 m in the final . At the World Championships in London he was tenth in the final . In 2018 he again took part in the Commonwealth Games in the Australian Gold Coast and won the bronze medal there with 63.61 m. At the Mediterranean Games in Tarragona he won with 62.98 m in front of the Slovenian Kristjan Čeh . At the beginning of August he reached the final at the European Championships in Berlin , where he finished eighth with a throw of 63.62 m.

In 2007, 2010, between 2012 and 2014 as well as 2016 and 2017 Parellis was the Cypriot champion in the discus throw. He is a graduate in Mechanical Engineering from Frederick University Cyprus .
