Here, strong throwers from the previous generation met the young new athletes. The latter group mainly included the 2017 world champion Andrius Gudžius and the Swedish vice world champion Daniel Ståhl. Successful launchers that were in competitive sport for a long time were the Pole Piotr Małachowski - including World Champion 2015 , European Champion of 2010 / 2016 , Olympic silver medalist from 2016 , the German Robert Harting - including world champion of 2009 / 2011 , the Olympic champion in 2012 , European champion of 2012 / 2014 - and the Este Gerd Kanter - including the Olympic champion in 2008 , European Vice champion of 2012/2014 it was one brother to the favorites, the German Olympic champion Christoph 2016 Harting, Robert Harting. Malachowski and Christoph Harting were already eliminated in the qualification.

With a first throw of 65.75 m, world champion Gudžius initially took the lead. With 63.82 m, the Greek Apostolos Parellis was in second place here. Even in the second round, the competition did not want to really pick up speed. With 63.45 m, Robert Harting was still the best thrower and was in third place. But it did not stop. Gudžius increased in the third round to 67.19 m and thus extended his lead. Vice world champion Ståhl now scored 64.20 m and pushed Parellis and R. Harting down one rank each.

In round four, the first final round of the eight best throwers, R. Harting improved to 64.33 m and was temporarily second. Ståhl now reach 68.23 m, displacing Gudžius from the top position. With his fifth litter, the Austrian Lukas Weißhaidinger climbed to 65.14 m and thus took bronze. In the last round almost everything shifted again. The eighth-placed Swede Simon Pettersson achieved 64.55 m, which brought him fourth. Gerd Kanter threw 64.34 m and was fifth ahead of Robert Harting. Lukas Weißhaidinger stayed in third place. Andrius Gudžius now reach 68.46 m. With that he had surpassed Daniel Ståhl with the last throw and became European champion before the Swede.
