Niels Lynge

Niels Peter Salomon Lynge (born July 20, 1880 in Nuuk ; † September 22, 1965 ibid) was a Greenlandic pastor , catechist , painter , poet and councilor .

Life

Niels Lynge studied at Grønlands Seminarium from 1894 to 1900 and then worked briefly in Kangerluarsussuaq . When Rasmus Berthelsen died a short time later , Christian Rosing moved to the seminary to replace him, so that the position of catechist in Nuuk became vacant. The young Niels Lynge was therefore called to Nuuk as a catechist, where he worked until 1922. He was then ordained a priest and was installed as a pastor in Maniitsoq before moving to Alluitsoq in 1931 . In 1943 he moved to Qeqertarsuatsiaat and retired in 1950.

He was one of the main figures of the Peqatigiinniat movement founded by Stephen Møller (1882-1909), which, as a religious movement, shaped a large part of the Greenlandic population from 1908 by awakening national identity and triggering a reform movement in the country, which, among other things, in 1911 resulted in the establishment of Grønlands Landsråd . Niels Lynge himself was a member of the regional council from 1917 to 1922, but was represented by Abel Egede in 1922 . Later he was again two terms from 1927 to 1938, where he was represented in 1932 by Ole Petersen .

Niels Lynge was also considered a poet, whose works can be found in hymn books, as well as an excellent painter who is particularly valued for his use of color. People brought black and white photographs of their hometowns to him and wished that they turned into colorful paintings on the canvas. In his house at Gertrud Rasksvej 24 ( → map ) he had painted the walls - allegedly to prevent his children from stealing the paintings - with landscape motifs from the region around Nuuk and put golden wooden frames around them or painted them so deceptively real that even a king Frederik IX. got up when he visited in 1960 to check if they were real or painted. The house was later bought and is now open to the public as part of the Nuuk Art Museum .

In 1931 he received the Kongelige Belønningsmedalje and in 1958 the Knight's Cross of the Dannebrog Order .
