Elias Lauf was the son of Ole Peter David Gideon Alaufesen (1862–?) And his first wife Karen Siegstad (1861–1894). He later shortened his last name - originally a patronymic from his grandfather's first name, the Greenlandic version of the name Rafael - to Lauf . He married on July 13, 1922 in Qaqortoq Astridor Augusta Nikoline Høegh (1901-1995), a sister of Pavia (1886-1956), John (1890-1966) and Frederik Høegh (1895-1970).

Elias Lauf began an apprenticeship as a cooper at a young age , but in 1909 at the age of 15 he was accepted at Grønland's seminarium . He graduated from this in 1915 and then moved to Denmark to receive further theological training. In 1920 he was in Copenhagen ordained . He was hired as a pastor in Nuuk , where he was appointed first pastor in 1926. He then worked in Paamiut , Upernavik , Ilulissat , Tasiilaq , Aasiaat and Alluitsup Paa as pastor and from 1962 as visitation propst .

The first modern school in Greenland can be traced back to his instigation. He was also the editor of the church newspaper Ilagîngnut atuagagssiaĸ ( magazine for the community ) for many years .

During his time in Paamiut he was an elected member of the South Greenland State Council from 1927 to 1932 . Only in the last meeting was he represented by Sofus Nyekjær . As early as the 1920s he had the idea that Greenland should be represented in the Danish parliament. After Greenland had received two seats in the Folketing from 1953 , Elias Lauf was elected for two legislative terms from 1957 to 1959 and then to 1960 as a member of parliament.

On the occasion of his 70th birthday in 1964, Elias Lauf was named the second Greenlander after Frederik Nielsen to be knight of the first degree of the Dannebrog Order. He died in 1981 at the age of 87.
