Hans Christian Theodor Rosing (born December 20, 1866 in Copenhagen , † August 27, 1944 in Appat ) was a Greenlandic missionary .

Life

Christian Rosing was the son of the Udsteds administrator Peter Frederik Rosing (1835-1911) and the midwife Haldora Helene Margrethe Caroline Petrussen (1842-1901). He was born in Denmark, where his mother was the first Greenlander to be trained as a midwife. They returned to Greenland shortly after his birth. In 1882 he was admitted to Grønland's seminarium and graduated in 1888. In the same year he was employed as a catechist in atammik , but because of his pedagogical skills he was appointed teacher at the seminary a year later and worked as a catechist in Nuuk . In 1901 he became the head catechist of Nuuk. He was interested in the mission in East Greenland and asked to be the successor of Frederik Carl Peter Rüttel when he had to resign for health reasons. He received further training in Denmark from 1903 to 1904 and was ordained . In the same year he began as a missionary in Ammassalik , where he was able to baptize the last East Greenlandic pagans in 1921. A year later he returned to West Greenland and became a pastor in Appat. He retired in 1936.

Christian Rosing was considered a talented missionary who was able to successfully combine his own missionary interests with the previous way of life of the Tunumiit without forcing it from the East Greenlanders. He was very popular with them and had their full confidence. In 1906 he published the book Tunuamiut (published in 1946 as Ostgrønlændere in Danish), in which he described the culture and mission in East Greenland.

Christian Rosing's brothers were the artist and regional councilor Peter Rosing (1871–1938) and the regional councilor Karl Rosing (1878–?). He married on July 6, 1890 in Maniitsoq Malene Karoline Klara Kreutzmann (1869–1943), daughter of the artist and Udsteds administrator Jens Kreutzmann (1828–1899) and his wife Charlotte Amalia Sommer (1837–1898). The following children were born from the marriage:

Christian Rosing was made a knight of the Dannebrog Order in 1937 . He died in Appat in 1944 at the age of 77.
