Svend Peter Kristian Rosing (born January 9, 1892 in Nuuk , † August 27, 1965 in Ilulissat ) was a Greenlandic pastor , catechist and painter .

Life

Peter Rosing was the son of the missionary Hans Christian Theodor Rosing (1866-1944) and his wife Malene Karoline Klara Kreutzmann (1869-1943). His brothers were the writer Otto Rosing (1896–1965) and the artist Kâle Rosing (1911–1974). Through his mother he was the grandson of the painter Jens Kreutzmann (1828–1899). Through his father, he was the nephew of the artist Peter Rosing (1871-1938) and the Provincial Councilor Karl Rosing (1878-?). He married on August 25, 1918 in Ilulissat Birthe Sophie Agathe Guldager (1898–1971), daughter of the carpenter Jørgen Guldager (1862–1936) and his wife Katrine Sara Lynge (1866–1932).

After he graduated from Grønland's seminarium in Nuuk in 1915 , he worked as head catechist in Denmark until he was appointed pastor of Aasiaat in 1918 and in Qeqertarsuaq from 1920 . In 1922 he was sent to East Greenland to replace his father as a missionary in Ammassalik . Until 1934 he continued his work with the newly baptized East Greenlanders. Through his childhood in Ammassalik, he knew both the language and the way of thinking of the local Tunumiit and was thus well qualified for his task. He worked in Ittoqqortoormiit for two more years before he returned to West Greenland and was replaced by his brother Otto as pastor in East Greenland. Most recently he worked in Qeqertarsuaq, Upernavik and Ilulissat before retiring in 1946.

Instead of a pastor, however, Peter Rosing preferred to be a painter all his life and has been doing this all his working life on the side. His preferred motifs were portraits and landscapes , in which he works a lot with the play between light and shadow. He was very much inspired by the original culture that he perceived among the Tunumiit, and motifs from old worlds of legends appear again and again in his works . He has also illustrated some Greenlandic reading books. He also provided his brother Otto with the material for his East Greenland family stories Angákortaligssuit .
