Atammik [ aˈtamːik ] (according to the old spelling Atangmik ) is a Greenlandic settlement in the Maniitsoq district in the Qeqqata communia .

location

Atammik is located on the southern tip of the Toqqusap Nunaa region on the Ammassivik fjord, 75 km south of Maniitsoq and 72 km north of Nuuk . The nearest inhabited place is Napasoq 29 km north.

history

Atammik was founded as Udsted between 1828 and 1843 . The Udsted was built a little further to the northwest than the previous living space, where ruins can still be found. Originally the place belonged to the colonial district Godthåb and was transferred to Sukkertoppen in 1877 . Since 1911 Atammik was a separate community in the colonial district of Sukkertoppen, which did not belong to a residential place. The municipality was part of the 9th district of South Greenland.

In 1918, 93 people lived in Atammik. The population, which probably originally came from the Pisuffik archipelago between Atammik and Nuuk, was described as extremely large and strong and very local, so that many residents moved further away on hunting trips, as was otherwise customary. They lived in ten Greenland houses. The Udsteds administrator's apartment dates from 1913 and was a timber-clad half-timbered building with three rooms. The bacon house, with a shop on the top floor, was built in 1890. The provisions store was built in 1897. Both buildings were made of stone and were almost 32 m² in size. There was also a powder house, a salt factory and a woodshed used as a cod store. The school band was still quite new in 1918. It was made of stone, about 29 square meters and equipped with an altar and a kneeling bench. A trained catechist taught there. In addition to the Udsteds administrator, there was also a midwife in Atammik. The residents, who included seventeen hunters and four fishermen, made a living from hunting seals, reindeer and foxes.

In 1931 a new shop was built. As early as 1936 Atammik received a new chapel and in 1946 a fish house was built. In 1960 there were already 183 people living in the village.

From 1950 to 2008 Atammik was part of the Maniitsoq community . Since 2009 the place is part of the Qeqqata communia .

economy

Atammik lives mainly from fishing. Whereas in the past it was mainly capelin that could be caught, today it is more cod and sea hare . Reindeer are also hunted in the area . Royal Greenland is the settlement's largest employer. 34 km to the northeast is the former Seqi olivine mine , which was closed in 2010. There is an expandable tourism potential in Atammik.

Infrastructure and supply

In Atammik there are two landing stages for ships and boats as well as the wharf of the fish factory. The place is called every fortnight by supply ships. A place for a heliport has been designated in the east of the village, but not yet built on. Paths are available.

Nukissiorfiit supplies Atammik with drinking water via a water pipe from Tiiluata Tasersua one and a half kilometers to the northwest . Nukissiorfiit also operates a diesel power plant to secure the power supply. The place has no sewer system. Sewage is dumped into the ocean, while waste is incinerated or landfilled. TELE Greenland is responsible for the telecommunications supply.
