Kangerluarsuk [ kaˌŋɜɬːuˈɑsːuk ] (according to the old spelling Kangerdluarssuk ) is a deserted, fallen Greenlandic settlement in the Maniitsoq district in Qeqqata Kommunia .

location

Kangerluarsuk is located at the mouth of the Kangerluarsuup Kangerluarsua in a tiny bay. 17 km to the west is the district capital Maniitsoq as the closest place.

history

Kangerluarsuk was mentioned as early as 1775. Since 1911 Kangerluarsuk belonged to the municipality of Sukkertoppen.

In 1918 there were 61 people living in seven houses in the area. It is said of one of the houses that 17 people lived there in spite of its less than 15 m². Among the residents were twelve hunters and three fishermen. There was an unskilled catechist and a midwife in Kangerluarsuk who worked in the school chapel built in 1912. It measured around 30 m² and was made of stone. Inside it was an altar and a kneeling bench. The residents lived mainly from reindeer and whale hunting. The seal hunt hardly played a role. Besides that, some foxes were caught.

In 1938 it was proposed in Grønlands Landsråd to give the residents of Kangerluarsuk financial support to be able to leave the place because they were afraid of starvation. It turned out that this had been said by only three families and the rest did not want to leave the apartment, so the proposal was rejected. In 1950, Kangerluarsuk became part of the new Maniitsoq municipality . In the same year only 36 people lived in Kangerluarsuk and in 1952 the place was given up.
