Appamiut [ ˈapːamiutˢʰ ] (according to the old spelling Agpamiut ) is a deserted, fallen Greenlandic settlement in the Maniitsoq district in Qeqqata Kommunia .

location

Appamiut is located on the south coast of a large peninsula on the Tunu strait (Hamborgersund). 20 km north-northwest is Kangaamiut and 30 km south-southeast is the district capital Maniitsoq .

history

As early as the 18th century it was reported that there are numerous ruins to be found in Appamiut, which bear witness to an early settlement. In 1904 a medal was found in one of the ruins, which had been minted in Cerignola in 1503 in honor of the victory of the Spanish general Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba y Aguilar over France . During the whaling period it must have entered an inith household as an exchange item. From 1911 Appamiut belonged to the municipality of Kangaamiut.

In 1918 there were 58 residents in the village who lived in eight houses. There were five hunters and three fishermen among the residents. They made their living mainly from hunting seals and reindeer, but one of the hunters was also a cattle breeder. His stable was 20 m² and was built as a peat wall house. In it he kept eight sheep, ten goats and one heifer. A few more animals had perished in the harsh winter before.

In 1922 a bacon house was built and in 1923 a school chapel. In 1945 there were already 109 people in Appamiut. From 1950 Appamiut belonged to the new municipality of Maniitsoq . In 1950 only 81 people lived in Appamiut and in 1960 there were 17 people. In 1961 the last residents left the place.
