Narsarmiut [ ˌnɑˈsːɑmːiutˢʰ ] (according to the old spelling Narssarmiut ) is a deserted Greenlandic settlement in the Maniitsoq district in the Qeqqata communia .

location

Narsarmiut is located in the southeast of an island of the same name behind the mouth of the Kangaamiut Kangerluarsuat . Kangaamiut is 7.5 km south.

history

Narsarmiut was already inhabited before the colonization. Numerous ruins testify to this. As early as 1724, Hans Egede reported on the place where he found an abandoned Dutch ship full of provisions and merchandise. At that time, 60 to 70 families are said to have lived in Narsarmiut, which was an enormous amount for the conditions at the time. The large number of inhabitants was the reason that Claus Paarss considered building a lodge in Narsarmiut in 1730. The place was the southernmost where Dutch whalers traded. The place was also inhabited in 1802. In 1855 Hinrich Johannes Rink found 42 residents there. At the beginning of the 20th century, the last Greenlandic house of the Torsooq type was in Narsarmiut, the entrance of which was sunken. From 1911 Narsarmiut belonged to the Kangaamiut community.

In 1918, 30 people were counted who lived in five houses. The inhabitants lived almost exclusively from reindeer and seal hunting. There were five hunters and one fisherman. A reader taught on site. It is said that the inhabitants were partly descendants of the self-proclaimed prophet Habakkuk in the 18th century .

In 1930 Narsarmiut had 28 residents, but by 1947 the number rose to 40. Then the number of inhabitants fell suddenly and in 1950 the last residents left the residential area.
