Ikkamiut [ ˈikːamiutˢʰ ] (according to the old spelling Íkamiut ) is a deserted Greenlandic settlement in the Maniitsoq district in Qeqqata Kommunia .

location

Ikkamiut is located at the tip of a peninsula between the Ikkamiut Kangerluarsuat and Sermilinnguaq fjords . The nearest inhabited places are Maniitsoq 24 km south and Kangaamiut 34 km northwest.

history

At the beginning of the colonial era, Ikkamiut was heavily inhabited. In 1775 it was said that the place was uninhabited and was only used as a hunting ground for the residents of Maniitsoq in winter. Even Karl Ludwig Giesecke described the place still in 1812 as a winter dwelling place.

Later Ikkamiut had the status of Udsteds , and 52 residents as Hinrich Johannes Rink mentioned in the 1860s, when he carried an avalanche was destroyed, and some residents were killed. It can be assumed that this event happened in the first half of the 1870s and Ikkamiut was re-established as a residential area afterwards.

From 1911 Ikkamiut belonged to the Sukkertoppen community. In 1918, 28 people lived in the village and lived in four houses. A catechist taught in a residential building. The residents, among whom were four hunters and three fishermen, made a living from hunting seals, reindeer and foxes, but the hunt was not very successful during this period.

In 1933 a fish house was built. In 1942, 61 people lived in Ikkamiut. In 1950 there were 47 and in 1953 the last residents left the place.
