Oqaasileriffik is located on the Ilimmarfik campus in the University of Greenland

The Oqaasileriffik is the language authority in Greenland that deals with the Greenlandic language .

The name of the authority translated means Where to deal with words. The Oqaasileriffik is subordinate to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Church in Naalakkersuisut .

It was founded in 1998, initially with only one employee, in 1999 with three and in 2004 with six including student assistants . Six people now work at Oqaasileriffik, plus an indefinite number of student employees.

Part of the Oqaasileriffik is Oqaasiliortut ( German  who make the words ), the Greenland language council. He is responsible for collecting, registering and accepting new words in Greenlandic. It also serves as a contact body for everything related to language. It lays down the orthographic rules of Greenlandic and gives instructions on the use of new and foreign words. There is also close cooperation with language councils in Scandinavia, Canada, Alaska and Russia. Part of the Oqaasiliortut is also the committee for personal names, which was independent until 2014.

Another organ of the Oqaasileriffik is the place name committee. It is responsible for the acceptance of submitted suggestions for naming islands, mountains, etc.

The technical database of the Oqaasileriffik, the Oqaaserpassualeriffik ( Where to deal with a large amount of words. ) Contains a text-to-speech program ( Martha ), a word generator for building words in the polysynthetic language , a program that creates words the spelling created by Samuel Kleinschmidt in the 1973 reformed and a program that reproduces the pronunciation of the words in the International Phonetic Alphabet . In addition, the Oqaasileriffik offers several Greenlandic-Danish (-English) dictionaries.

For a long time the Oqaasileriffik was headed by Carl Christian Olsen . The current director is Katti Frederiksen , daughter of the politician Suka K. Frederiksen .
