Rivian Automotive LLC is an American automobile company for electric cars , based in Plymouth , Michigan , and other plants in San Jose , Irvine , Carson , Normal and Woking . It was founded in 2009 by RJ Scaringe. In 2017 it was announced that both a fully electric SUV and a pickup truck will be built.

Current planned models

Two fully electric vehicles are currently in the final planning phase, which were presented at the Los Angeles Auto Show in 2018: In November 2019, Rivian announced that production would start at the end of 2020 and the first deliveries would take place in 2021. In July 2020 it was announced that the R1T would be delivered to customers in the USA in June 2021 and the R1S in August 2021.

Each wheel has a separate motor. This means that towing loads of several tons are possible. Both vehicles are semi-autonomous level 3 and designed for road traffic and off-road driving.

In November 2019 it was announced that the Ford subsidiary Lincoln will be launching an SUV based on Rivian technology in 2022 .

Employee

Rivian currently has around 750 employees worldwide. Well-known employees include former Apple Vice President Mike Bell.

Collaboration with Amazon and funding

In February 2019, it was announced that investments of $ 700 million had been made by interested parties; it had Amazon largest share. Also Ford has invested US $ 500 million in Rivian. Jeff Bezos announced his plans for Amazon in September 2019, according to which 80% of the energy demand should be covered by renewable sources by 2024 and 100% by 2030. Amazon intends to do the same for delivery and announced the order for 100,000 electric delivery vans, which Rivian will deliver from 2021 to 2030. In 2020, Rivian raised $ 2.5 billion in support by July. Most of this comes from US funds, but Amazon also increased its stake again.
