Frederik Carl Peter Rüttel
Frederik Carl Peter Rüttel (born June 6, 1859 in Gårslev , † March 15, 1915 on Thurø ) was a Danish missionary in Greenland .
Life
Frederik Carl Peter Rüttel was the son of the teacher Andreas Peter Rüttel (1804–1876) and his second wife Catharina Nissen (1820–1886). He actually wanted to become a sculptor, but gave in to his father's wishes and completed an apprenticeship as a manufacturer. In 1878 he moved to Copenhagen , where he took drawing lessons at the technical school and was then accepted at the local art academy . After reading Søren Kierkegaards Øjeblikket , he decided to become a pastor instead. In 1883 he enrolled at the Latin School in Fredericia . From 1887 to 1892 he taught at the Danish Institute for the Blind. He also studied theology.
He graduated in 1891 and signed up for missionary work at the Ammassalik colony in East Greenland, which was about to be built . He was accepted and ordained in 1892 , then learned the Greenlandic language in Qaqortoq within two years . In 1894 he finally became East Greenland's first missionary. In fact, he did not baptize the first Greenlanders until five years later with Kârale Andreassen and his family. His careful handling of the Tunumiit , however, was later given high credit, since under him there were clear tendencies towards civilization in the East Greenlanders. In 1904 he left East Greenland and became a pastor in Alluitsoq . In 1912 he retired and left Greenland.
On May 6, 1892, he married Helga Margrethe Westerberg (1863-1918), daughter of the bookbinder Christian Geoorg Westerberg (around 1824-1892) and his wife Sara Frederikke Marie Rasmussen (1826-1912) in Copenhagen. In 1911 he was made a knight of the Order of Dannebrog . His work Til Angmagssalik describes the traditional life of the Tunumiit. Frederik Carl Peter Rüttel died in Denmark in 1915 at the age of 55.
