Alluitsoq [ ˈaɬːuˌit͡sɔq ] (according to the old spelling Agdluitsoĸ ; German  Lichtenau ) is a deserted Greenlandic settlement in the Nanortalik district in the Kujalleq municipality .

location

Alluitsoq is located on the west bank of the Alluitsup Kangerlua in the south of the peninsula with the Tasikuluulik (Vatnahverfi) lake area . Alluitsup Paa is five kilometers south . Up to Ammassivik on the other side of the fjord it is 13 km to the northeast.

history

In 1774 the Moravian Brethren , more precisely the missionaries Jens Sørensen and Gottfried Grillich, set up the Lichtenau mission station in Alluitsoq. In the same year 90 Greenlanders settled there. A year later the station already had 200 residents. The house was a large stone building, but it had no roof. In 1802 there were already 405 baptized people who were assigned to the mission station. In 1828 the last heath was baptized. In 1834 there were already 674 Greenlanders under Lichtenau. The residential area was considered one of the most beautiful places in Greenland because of its gardens. In 1900, Alluitsoq was abandoned by the Moravians, but as a result the residential area remained a separate, now Danish, parish. From 1911 Alluitsoq was part of the municipality of Sydprøven.

In 1919 there were 126 people in Alluitsoq who lived in 22 Greenland houses. The church was a good 100 m², was a half-timbered building with stone walls, a flat roof and a church tower. The pastor's apartment measured 113 m² and had two floors, with the lower floor made of stone and the upper floor made of wood. It had seven rooms and also housed the school, which measured around 25 m². There was also a stable and several outbuildings in the village. Among the residents were sixteen hunters, ten fishermen, the pastor, a catechist and a midwife. The population lived from fishing and seal hunting.

While the fishery in South Greenland expanded in the 20th century, Alluitsoq received no funding through the construction of a fish house. From 1942 Pastor Jens Lars Andreas Chemnitz ran the Gertrud Rasks Minde children's home in Alluitsoq . In 1961 the last pastor finished his work in Alluitsoq. In 1960, 115 people lived in Alluitsoq after the population had risen to 153 in the previous decades. In 1970 there were only 57.
