Sammisoq [ ˈsamːisɔq ] (according to the old spelling Sangmissoĸ ) is a deserted Greenlandic settlement in the Nanortalik district in the municipality of Kujalleq .
location
Sammisoq is located on the west coast of the (half) island of the same name , which forms the southern part of Christian IV Ø . The fjord junction Imarsuaq is in front of the village . The closest inhabited place is Aappilattoq 26 km northwest.
history
Sammisoq was settled in 1906. In 1909 the residential area was elevated to the status of Udsted , when Sammisoq replaced Itilleq . From 1911 on, Sammisoq was its own community, which included Itilleq, Nuuk and Qernertoq . The community was the southernmost part of Greenland. It was part of the 1st district electoral council of South Greenland.
1919 lived 49 people lived in the place. Most of them were Tunumiit immigrants . Until 1900 the population also belonged to the Moravian Brethren . The population lived in seven Greenland houses. There was also a 55 m² half-timbered apartment for the Udsteds administrator and a wooden bacon house with a shop. Among the residents were eight hunters, the Udsteds administrator and a catechist. The population lived mainly from sealing seals.
In 1925, the Sammisoq community lost the Nuuk residential area to the Aappilattoq community. In 1930 it was proposed in the Provincial Council that Sammisoq should be given up in favor of Itilleq because the fishing conditions there were better. However, the idea was rejected for the time being in 1931 because the residents in both places did not agree. In 1934 the case was resumed because the population showed more and more agreement. Also because of the poor health conditions, which district doctor Axel Laurent-Christensen chalked up, the regional council decided that a relocation from Sammisoq to Itilleq should be considered. In 1936 Grønlands Styrelse announced that the matter would be dealt with. In 1939 the Second World War broke out and Greenland lost the connection to Denmark, so the plan could not be pursued any further. In 1943, Sammisoq was given up.
