Ilivermiut [ iliˈvɜmːiutˢʰ ] (according to the old spelling Ilivermiut ) is a desolate Greenlandic settlement in the Nanortalik district in the municipality of Kujalleq .

location

Ilivermiut is only around 800 m southwest of Ammassivik on the east bank of the Alluitsup Kangerlua .

history

Ilivermiut was settled in 1910. The following year the residential area became part of the municipality of Sydprøven.

In 1919 the residential area already had 79 residents, who lived in 14 houses that were described as poorly built. The residents belonged to the Moravian Brethren until 1900 . There were eight hunters, seven fishermen and one reader among the inhabitants, but the children in Ilivermiut were educated at the school in nearby Ammassivik, which was a 20-minute walk away.

In 1926 over 100 people lived in Ilivermiut. In the same year the South Greenland Provincial Council discussed the relocation of all residents to Ammassivik. The place had got a new church and a new school two years earlier, which should also be used by the residents of Ilivermiut. The short distance was made more difficult by the geography, as a steep mountain ridge made the way to Ammassivik impossible for children and old people to pass. Therefore, the residents wanted their own school, but this would not have been financially feasible. Landsfoged Knud Oldendow welcomed the resettlement proposal and got in touch with the local council and the residents. However, they did not want resettlement because they found the sanitary and living conditions in Ilivermiut to be better than in Ammassivik. At this time, no one wanted to force anyone to move, so the residential area was left, but no school and no fish house were built in Ilivermiut, which nevertheless led to emigration until 1945 when the last eight residents left the place.
