Ikigaat [ ikiˈgaːtˢʰ ] (according to the old spelling Ikigait ; Danish Østprøven ) is a deserted Greenlandic settlement in the Nanortalik district in the municipality of Kujalleq .

location

Ikigaat is located on the south coast of a peninsula between the Illukasiip Tunua and the Narsap Saqqaa . On the opposite bank of the latter is 4.5 km northeast of Narsarmijit . In front of Ikigaat there are several small islands and skerries, of which Umiuffik , Oqaatsortalissuaq and Qupaloraarsuttalik are named.

history

Ikigaat is located on the site of the medieval Herjólfsnes , which was founded by the Grænlendingar .

In 1834 the Udsted Østprøven was founded in Ikigaat, for which two houses were built. In 1850 Ikigaat had 19 residents who belonged to four families. Ikigaat is the original place of origin of the important Chemnitz family, as the progenitor of the family, Jens Carl Vilhelm Chemnitz (1811-1857), worked here as the Udsteds administrator. When the Udsteds administrator who was active at the time died in 1877, no successor was sought and Ikigaat became a place to live. However, his widow and daughter stayed in Ikigaat. It was abandoned around 1902, but again used as a shepherd's settlement for some time after the Second World War.
