Illukasik [ iɬːukasik ] (the old spelling Igdlukasik ) is a desolate fallen Greenlandic settlement in the district Nanortalik in the kujalleq .

location

Illukasik is located on the southern tip of an island of the same name with numerous smaller offshore islands that shield the place. From Illukasik it is 10 km east to Narsarmijit .

history

Illukasik consisted of two groups of buildings which were the most pathetic in all of South Greenland, which explains the place name. They were partly made of dung, which gave off dirty water, and they were built on top of each other like terraces so that the water always flowed into the house below. The houses were therefore always damp and dirty.

Illukasik originally belonged to the Moravian Brethren . From 1911 Illukasik was part of the municipality Nanortalik.

In 1919, 161 people lived in Illukasik, who lived in 29 houses. There was a 37 m² school chapel at the living space. Among the residents were 28 hunters, a catechist and a midwife. The residents made their living by hunting seals, foxes and polar bears.

The population fell rapidly in the following decades and was only about 70 people in the 1930s. In 1943, 19 people still lived in Illukasik and in 1949 the last nine residents left the place.
