Salliit [ saˌɬːiːtˢʰ ] (according to the old spelling Sagdlît ) is a deserted Greenlandic settlement in the Nanortalik district in the municipality of Kujalleq .

location

Salliit is located on the island group of the same name between Alluitsup Paa and Nanortalik in the Labrador Sea . This made Salliit one of the most isolated places in South Greenland. In summer it was almost impossible to reach because of the drift ice and in winter the connection was often interrupted by stormy seas.

history

Salliit was founded as Udsted around 1848 . Originally the place belonged to the Moravian Brethren .

From 1911 Salliit was a separate community in the colonial district of Julianehaab, to which the Isua residential area still belonged. It was part of the 2nd district electoral council of South Greenland.

In 1919 51 people lived in Salliit. In addition to ten houses, there was an apartment of the Udsteds administrator, built in 1848, which measured around 76 m² and had three rooms. In 1857 a food store was built and in 1870 a bacon house with a shop. There was also a cooperage and a powder house, which, like all other buildings, were made of stone. Only the 45 m² school chapel was made of wood and had an organ. Among the residents were, in addition to the Udsteds administrator, a midwife and a trained catechist, eight hunters and five fishermen who made their living from seal hunting and fishing as well as whale and fox hunting.

Because of the poor conditions due to the location, more and more residents left Salliit and in 1926 there were temporarily no more people in the village. The municipality in question was dissolved by a decision of the regional council in 1926, as there were only residents in Isua . In 1928 Salliit was officially given up. The school band was moved to Qunnermiut in 1951 .
