Itilleq [ iˈtˢiɬːɜq ] (according to the old spelling Itivdleĸ ) is a desolate Greenlandic settlement in the Nanortalik district in the municipality of Kujalleq .

location

Itilleq is located on the northeast coast of the island of the same name (Eggers Ø), the southernmost larger island of Greenland. Itilleq has been the southernmost residential area in Greenland since Illorsuatsiaat was abandoned . The closest inhabited place is Aappilattoq 43 km northwest.

history

Itilleq was initially an Udsted . Until 1900 the population belonged to the Moravian Brethren . In 1909 the place was degraded to a residential area and Sammisoq was instead made an Udsted, to which Itilleq belonged from 1911 onwards.

In 1919, 72 people lived in Itilleq, living in twelve houses, which were poorly built. Among them were twelve hunters, three fishermen and a catechist. The majority of the population lived from seal hunting.

Around 1930 consideration was given to reappointing Itilleq to Udsted instead of Sammisoq, but this did not happen because of the Second World War . In 1943, both settlements were abandoned at the same time for unknown reasons despite the good location. Possibly this should strengthen the development of Aappilattoq.
