Christian Tobias Jakob Berthelsen (nickname Christiaannguaq ; born October 7, 1916 in Nuuk ; † April 23, 2015 ) was a Greenlandic teacher , school inspector , school director , author , translator and judge .

Life

family

Christian Berthelsen was the son of the Udsteds administrator Johan Jørgen Josef Berthelsen (1883-1958) and his wife Karen Bodil Abegael Lynge (1882-1950). His father was a grandson of Rasmus Berthelsen (1827-1901). His mother was the sister of Niels Lynge (1880-1965). His ancestors included Jørgen Nielsen Møller (1801–1862), Christian Alexander Platou (1779–1827), Anders Olsen (1718–1786) and Hans Egede (1686–1758). His brother Rasmus Hans Pavia Karl Berthelsen (1905–1980) was mayor of the Nuuk community from 1955 to 1963 and the father of the politician and musician Per Berthelsen (* 1950). Christian Berthelsen married Vibeke Kaja Wulff-Hansen (1919–?) On June 27, 1945, daughter of the architect Poul Wulff-Hansen (1885–1956) and his wife Marie Louise Nielsen (1893–1976). The children Lone (* 1946), Finn (* 1949) and Hannah (* 1958) were born from the marriage.

Career

Christian Berthelsen attended the school in Kangeq and Qoornoq because of his father's work , later the Efterskole in Qaqortoq and completed the catechist training at Grønland's seminary in 1936 and was one of the first Greenlanders to attend the teachers' seminar in Jonstrup , which he finished in 1941. Until 1945 he continued his education at Danmarks Lærerhøjskole and the International University in Helsingør . He then became head of the Efterskole in Qaqortoq and school consultant in South Greenland . In 1947 he became a teacher in Qullissat and a year later a school consultant for North Greenland , while at the same time teaching at Efterskole in Aasiaat . In 1953 he was head of the Efterskole for a year. In 1955 he became school inspector in Nuuk and a year later information advisor to Greenland's cultural council. In 1960 he was appointed school principal for all of Greenland before retiring in 1972. From 1977 to 1986 he taught the Greenlandic language at Københavns Universitet .

As a Greenland school director, he was also a member of the school board from 1960 to 1972. From 1962 to 1972 he was also a member of the administration of Knud Rasmussenip Højskolia and from 1963 to 1971 of the Greenland National Museum . From 1957 to 1971 he was an administrative member of the Greenland Publishing House, of which he was chairman until 1963. From 1953 to 1971 he was a member of the Greenland Language and Spelling Committee, of which he was chairman from 1967. He also served as a lay judge in Grønlands Landsret from 1956 to 1971 . From 1976 to 1985 he was chairman of Det Grønlandske Selskab and from 1975 to 1984 the place name committee. From 1976 to 1985 he was an administrative member of the Arctic Institute . From 1974 to 1976 he was a representative of the Snoghøj Folkehøjskole and from 1975 to 1979 a member of the Neighboring Literature Committee of the Nordic Council of Ministers .

Christian Berthelsen has worked as an author of books and articles on school subjects and literature in Greenland. He also translated numerous books, including the Old and New Testaments . He died in 2015 at the age of 98, making him one of the oldest Greenlanders of all time.
