The athletes competed in two groups for a qualifying round. The qualification distance for the direct entry into the final was 8.00 m. Since only two jumpers exceeded this distance - highlighted in light blue, the final field was filled with the following best jumpers from both groups - highlighted in light green - to a total of twelve participants. In the end, 7.71 m had to be achieved for participation in the finals.

final

August 8, 2018, 7:40 p.m. CEST

The strongest European long jumper in recent years Greg Rutherford from Great Britain did not start here. The field consisted mainly of athletes without previous great international successes. For the circle of favorites, the Swedish Vice European Champion from 2016 Michel Tornéus, the French European Championship third from 2016 Kafétien Gomis or the Czech Radek Juška as the European Championship fourth from 2016 came into question.

In lap one there was no athlete who could jump the eight-meter mark. In the second round, the German Fabian Heinle took the lead with 8.13 m. In the next round there were two more participants with jumps over eight meters. The Ukrainian Serhij Nykyforow equalized Heinle's width and the Greek Miltiadis Tendoglou succeeded in an attempt of exactly 8.00 m. Due to his better second-best jump, Nykyforow was now ahead of Heinle and Tendoglou. This was followed by the Pole Tomasz Jaszczuk with 7.92 m, the Briton Dan Bramble - 7.90 m, the Swede Thobias Nilsson Montler - 7.89 m - and Tornéus - 7.86 m.

In the fourth round Heinle jumped 8.02 m, which he exceeded Nykyforow's second best attempt and thus regained the lead. However, it was very close because the Ukrainian scored 8.00 m. With his fifth jump, Tendoglou, who had been third up until then, reached 8.25 m and was thus at the top. The last round brought no more shifts in the medal ranks. Miltiadis Tendoglou was the new European champion. Fabian Heinle won silver, Serhij Nykyforow bronze. Thobias Nilsson Montler reached 8.10 m with his last jump, with which he was fourth just five centimeters behind Heinle and Nykyforow. Tomasz Jaszczuk also exceeded eight meters with 8.08 m in fifth. Nothing changed in the next ranks. Dan Bramble was sixth ahead of Michel Tornéus and Frenchman Guillaume Victorin.
