Among the favorites were the two German hurdlers Cindy Roleder and Pamela Dutkiewicz. Dutkiewicz was the World Championship -Third of 2017 , Roleder had at the World Championships in 2015 laid the second place and was also the European champion of 2016 and EM -Third of 2014 . Strong competition came from Belarus. Elwira Herman had the second fastest time in the semifinals, just five hundredths of a second behind Dutkiewicz. Alina Talaj was third in the 2015 World Cup, second in the European Championship in 2016 and the European champion in 2012 . In the semifinals, the French Solène Ndama made an excellent impression with the third fastest time.

In the final, no athlete was initially able to break away. Dutkiewicz, Roleder, Ndama and the Polish Karolina Kołeczek did very well. Talaj and Ricarda Lobe, the third German in this race, followed very closely. In the last third Herman found her rhythm better and better. Together with Roleder, she led very thinly in front of Dutkiewicz and the Dutchwoman Nadine Visser, while the other competitors could not quite keep up. It stayed close to the finish line. Elwira Herman finally prevailed and was European champion with five hundredths of a second ahead of Pamela Dutkiewicz. Cindy Roleder won the bronze medal another five hundredths of a second back. Nadine Visser was fourth ahead of Ricarda Lobe and Karolina Kołeczek. Both Solène Ndama and Alina Talaj stepped into the penultimate hurdle and were disqualified.
