final

August 9, 2018, 9:20 p.m. CEST

The four-time European champion Mahiedine Mekhissi-Benabbad from France was the only obstacle runner from Europe who was competitive at world level against runners from Africa and the USA. He was the clear favorite here. For further Medals especially Mekhissi countryman Yoann Kowal came - EM -Dritter of 2016 / European Champion in 2014 - and the Pole Krystian Zalewski - Vice European Champion in 2014 - in question. However, the runners from Spain, who were three participants in this final, were also to be expected.

The race started at a slow pace, the 1000 meter split was 3: 02.31 min. On the second third of the route it got faster, but 2: 49.31 min for the second kilometer was not a top rate either. At this point, the Italian Yohanes Chiappinelli, who had set the fastest time in the run-up, was in the lead. So it all came down to lane separation. In the end, Mahiedine Mekhissi-Benabbad was unbeatable and won his fifth European Championship title with a margin of two and a half seconds . The Spaniard Fernando Carro Morillo became vice European champion. Yohanes Chiappinelli surprisingly secured the bronze medal ahead of Yoann Kowal. The Briton Zak Seddon was fifth, the Spaniard Daniel Arce was sixth ahead of Krystian Zalewski and the Finn Topi Raitanen.
