Ahmed Abdelwahed (born May 26, 1996 in Rome ) is an Italian athlete of Egyptian origin who starts over 3000 meters obstacle .
Origin and life
Ahmed Abdelwaled was born in the capital, Rome, to Egyptian parents who had lived in Italy for more than a decade. In his youth he played basketball in the position of playmaker. He still does the sport in his spare time. In 2008 he started athletics and started training at the youth performance center in Ostia . After initially turning to the pole vault, he switched to the middle distance distance from 2012 under the direction of his coach at the time, Andrea Ceccarelli.
Abdelwaled has lived in Camerino since 2016 , where he studied social sciences. There he is being trained by Roberto Scalla today.
Athletic career
After switching to the middle distance distance, Abdelwaled competed in the Italian U18 championships in 2012, where he won the 2000 meter obstacle course in 6: 06.43 min. In 2013 he became the Italian U18 indoor champion over 1000 m. After becoming the Italian U20 indoor champion over 1500 meters in 2014, he was about to quit athletics. With the encouragement of his coach Vittorio Di Saverio and his teammate Yassin Bouih , he decided to start again in 2015. After the middle season, he won the national U23 championship title in the obstacle course in 2016 and also finished sixth in the adult category. Between May and June 2016 he improved his 3000 meter obstacle time by almost 15 seconds to 8: 51.84 minutes.
In 2017 Abdelwaled became Italian runner-up over 3000 m obstacle with a season best of 8: 36.73 min. A few weeks later, he started over this distance at the U23 European Championships in Bydgoszcz, where he won the silver medal behind his compatriot Yohanes Chiappinelli . In August he took eighth place at the 2017 Universiade in Taipei. In 2018 he ran a time of 8: 26.02 minutes in a competition in Kortrijk, Belgium, which was a personal best. During this time, he moved up to sixth place on the Italian best list in this discipline. In the run-up to the European Championships in Berlin, he was only two seconds behind this time and thus moved into the final. There he could not build on the lead time and finished in 13th place. In September he won silver at the national championships over 1500 m. In 2019 he became Italian champion over 3000 m obstacle for the first time.
