Education and life

After attending the humanistic grammar school in Vienna, Carl Nemeth was drafted into military service and was taken prisoner of war, from which he was released in 1946. He completed his musicology and German studies at the University of Vienna in 1949 with a doctorate. In 1950 he became an employee of the Haydn Society, and from 1953 research assistant at the Institute for Musicology at the University of Vienna. In 1955 Carl Nemeth became secretary of the Franz Schmidt community in Vienna, from 1958 to 1961 initially employed, then head of the Austrian Phonotheque . Between 1964 and 1972 he was head of the artistic office of the Vienna Volksoper under the direction of Albert Moser. From 1972 to 1990 Carl Nemeth was director of the United Theaters of the City of Graz and the Province of Styria, from 1976 managing director of the Grazer Philharmoniker and from 1974 a member of the Steirischer Herbst board of directors . In 1983 he was appointed honorary professor for historical musicology at the Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz , where Carl Nemeth held lectures until 1994.

Carl Nemeth was married to Christine Maurer-Kronegg, dancer, choreographer and ballet teacher, since 1972. His son Michael Nemeth has been General Secretary and Artistic Director of the Styrian Music Association, which was founded in 1815, since January 1st, 2008.

Director of the Graz Opera from 1972 to 1990

During the artistic direction of Carl Nemeth, more than 3,000 premieres and repertoire performances (opera, operetta, musical, ballet) took place at the Graz Opera, whereby the realization of rarely performed opera rarities was a fixed part of the program guidelines. In the 18 years of its management, which is the longest in the history of the Graz Opera, 11 premieres, 11 Austrian, one European, 28 Graz and four German-language premieres were recorded. In addition, numerous guest performances took place in Germany and abroad and 17 productions were recorded for ORF. In Carl Nemeth's era, an internationally renowned singing ensemble was formed and directors and conductors in demand around the world were hired. Carl Nemeth's time as director was dealt with by his son Michael Nemeth as part of his dissertation (2005).

Revival of the bel canto opera

When Carls Nemeth took office in 1972/73, the bel canto opera , which had been forgotten throughout Austria, experienced a remarkable renaissance with Vincenzo Bellini's I puritani under the musical direction of the specialist Argeo Quadri. It followed u. a. La sonnambula by Vincenzo Bellini (decoration: Jean-Pierre Ponnelle ), Gioachino Rossini's La gazza ladra and Mosè in Egitto , Gaetano Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor , Anna Bolena , L'elisir d'amore and Viva la Mamma as well as Verdi's I Lombardi alla prima crociata .

Mozart care and Richard Strauss

The continuous maintenance of the works of WA Mozart and Richard Strauss was an important part of Nemeth's concept (including Elektra , directed by Harry Kupfer and Ariadne auf Naxos , conducted by Ernst Märzendorfer ). Operetta and musical productions were also represented in large numbers, with Anatevka (with Oskar Czerwenka as Tevje ), West Side Story (German version by Marcel Prawy ) as well as Johann Strauss and Robert Stolz soireen particularly popular.

Newer works of the 20th century

Numerous world premieres and premieres of the new music theater sector have been brought out, many of them in collaboration with the avant-garde festival steirischer herbst (including Ernst Krenek's Orpheus and Eurydike and Jonny plays , Benjamin Britten's Death in Venice and A Midsummer Night's Dream , Otto M. Zykan's Symphony Aus the ideal world , Iván Eröds Orpheus ex machina , Wolfgang Rihms Jakob Lenz and Friedrich Cerha's The Pied Piper ) .

Old music

In 1980, Harry Kupfer staged Georg Friedrich Handel's opera Alcina . The team of Christian Pöppelreiter , Jörg Koßdorff and Nikša Bareza , who were responsible for the much-discussed realization of Richard Wagner's Ring des Nibelungen at the end of the Nemeth era, realized an open-air performance of Claudio Monteverdi's L'Orfeo in the Graz Landhaushof in 1984 . The premiere of the opera Angelica vincitrice di Alcina by the Styrian baroque composer Johann Joseph Fux on the occasion of the reopening of the renovated opera house on January 12, 1985 was of importance.

repertoire

The repertoire was regularly supplemented by rarely performed works (including Georges Bizet's Perlenfischer 1977, Léo Delibes Lakmé 1978, Richard Wagner's early work Das Liebesverbot 1983, Karl Goldmark's Queen of Saba 1985, Arrigo Boitos Mefistofele 1988 and Hector Berlioz ' Béatrice et Bénédict 1990). Specific for Carl Nemeth's 18-year time as director is not only the sustainable development of a singing ensemble that is known beyond national borders, but also the commitment of internationally sought-after soloists such as Lucia Aliberti , Giacomo Aragall , Carlo Bergonzi , Montserrat Caballé , José Carreras , Ileana Cotrubaș , Giuseppe Giacomini, James King , René Kollo , Birgit Nilsson , Luciano Pavarotti , Aldo Protti, Anneliese Rothenberger , Giuseppe Taddei or Eberhard Waechter .

ballet

Classical ballet was greatly enhanced by the appointment of the internationally active choreographer Waclaw Orlikowsky as head of ballet at the Graz Opera. Over the years it has managed to bring all of the great classical ballets to the stage. The highlight was the first performance of Spartakus by Aram Khachaturian in 1989 .
