Oskar Czerwenka
Oskar Czerwenka (born July 5, 1924 in Vöcklabruck ; † June 1, 2000 there ) was an Austrian opera singer ( bass ). He was also active as a painter, illustrator and author.
Life
Oskar Czerwenka grew up in his native town Vöcklabruck in Upper Austria. He studied world trade and then began private singing training in Vienna . He made his debut as a singer in Graz in 1947 . In 1951 Czerwenka became a member of the ensemble of the Vienna State Opera , which he remained until 1986. He also sang at the Volksoper Vienna and at all the major opera houses in the world, including the Metropolitan Opera for the first time in 1958 . There were also guest appearances at the Salzburg Festival (from 1953) and the Bregenz Festival .
repertoire
Oskar Czerwenka's repertoire consisted of 75 roles. One of his best-known roles was that of Ochs auf Lerchenau in Der Rosenkavalier . Other important roles were Count Waldner in Arabella , La Roche in Capriccio , Kezal in The Bartered Bride and Osmin in The Abduction from the Seraglio . One of his last major roles in the 1990s was that of milkman Tevje in Anatevka . Czerwenka also sang at the world premieres of the operas The Trial by Gottfried von Eine (1953 at the Salzburg Festival), Irish Legends by Werner Egk (1955) and Jacobowsky and Colonel von Giselher Klebe (1965). He also worked as a concert, lieder and oratorio singer.
Works as a painter and illustrator
As a painter, Oskar Czerwenka had exhibitions in Graz, Munich , Salzburg and Vienna. In 1963 he illustrated the book Kon-Figurationen zu texts by Ernst Pichler .

In 2008 the Landesmusikschule Vöcklabruck moved to the artist's villa in Vöcklabruck, which had been added to, and was renamed the Oskar Czerwenka Landesmusikschule.
