Jaume Aragall

Jaume Aragall i Garriga (born June 6, 1939 in Barcelona ) is a Spanish opera singer ( tenor ) from Catalonia . Internationally he is also known as Giacomo Aragall or in the Spanish form of the name as Jaime Aragall .

Life

After studying singing in Barcelona with Jaime Francisco Puig, who also taught singing to Josep Carreras , Jaume Aragall moved to Milan on a scholarship from the Gran Teatre del Liceu . There he continued his studies with Vladimir Badiali and developed his world career as Giacomo Aragall from Italy .

In 1963 he won the Verdi competition in Busseto and in the same year he made his debut in I Lombardi alla prima crociata at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice and it followed, also in 1963, L'amico Fritz von Mascagni . In 1964 he sang Cavaliere in Cardillac by Paul Hindemith and Rodolfo in La Bohème .

From the following season Aragall was a guest in all the major opera houses in the world. In 1966 he sang Romeo at La Scala in Milan in a sensational performance of Bellini's I Capuleti ei Montecchi with Renata Scotto and the young Luciano Pavarotti . Another important role was the Duke of Mantua in Verdi's Rigoletto , which took him to the Verona Arena in 1965 , to the Royal Opera House and the Metropolitan Opera in 1968 and to the San Francisco Opera in 1973 .

Aragall celebrated his greatest successes in Lucia di Lammermoor , Madama Butterfly , La traviata , Werther , Faust , Tosca , Manon , Don Carlos , Un ballo in maschera and Simon Boccanegra .

His repertoire also includes some rarer works such as Esclarmonde by Jules Massenet , of which there is an acclaimed recording with Joan Sutherland , or Caterina Cornaro by Donizetti with Montserrat Caballé .

Jaume Aragall has received numerous prizes and honors, such as the title of chamber singer at the Vienna State Opera . On June 24, 2015, State Opera Director Dominique Meyer presented him with the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art, 1st Class in the tea room of the Vienna State Opera .
