Carlo Bergonzi (born July 13, 1924 in Polesine Parmense-Vidalenzo , Italy ; † July 25, 2014 in Milan ) was an Italian opera singer with a tenor voice .

Life

Bergonzi began his stage career after studying at the “Arrigo Boito” Conservatory in Parma as a baritone and made his debut at the Lecce Theater in 1948 in the role of Figaro in Rossini's opera The Barber of Seville . Although he subsequently took on other baritone roles (including Rigoletto ), he retrained to the tenor subject in 1950/51 and appeared in Bari for the first time as the title hero in Giordano's opera Andrea Chénier on January 12, 1951 . Subsequently, he developed into one of the leading Lirico spinto tenors of the 20th century. Bergonzi performed with great success on all major opera stages in the world. He achieved particular success at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City (inaugural role: Radames ), where he was one of the leading tenors for over 25 years. He also sang his most important games in 21 seasons in the Arena di Verona . Even if he was overshadowed by his colleagues Franco Corelli , Giuseppe Di Stefano , Mario del Monaco and later Luciano Pavarotti among the general public , he was all the more appreciated in the professional world. The English singing expert John Steane in his work The Grand Tradition and Jürgen Kesting in The Great Singers see him as one of the most important tenors after the Second World War, especially because of his outstanding singing technique. The works of Verdi were at the center of Carlo Bergonzi's repertoire. To this fact he owes two important prizes, the Verdi d'oro (1972, Associazione "Amici di Verdi" ) and in 2000 the Gramophone's Lifetime Achievement Award with the reason: Greatest Verdi tenor of the 20th century .

After retiring from the stage, Bergonzi devoted himself to his hotel Il due Foscari in Busseto. He died in Milan on July 25, 2014 at the age of 90.
