Athletic career
Yohanes Chiappinelli comes from a village near the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa. At the age of seven he was adopted by an Italian professorial couple from the city of Siena after living in an orphanage for a year. At first he tried swimming and basketball, which he had to give up due to an injury. In 2008 he started athletics. In the spring of 2013 he took part in the U20 race in the Cross Country World Championships in Bydgoszcz, where he finished 44th. In the summer he competed at the U18 World Championships in Donetsk over 3000 meters. He moved into the final, in which he finished tenth. In autumn he competed in the Italian U18 championships over 1500 and 3000 meters. He took 4th place over the 1500 meters and won the gold medal over 3000 meters.
In 2014 he started in the obstacle course at the national youth championships, where he won over 2000 meters. A month later he competed in the 3000-meter obstacle course at the U20 World Championships in the older age group. In the run-up he reached the finish in fourth place, with which he made it to the final and there two days later, with a new best performance, took sixth place. After finishing 44th in the last World Cross Country Championships, he finished in Guiyang in 2015 as 33rd in the U20 race. In June he became the Italian U20 obstacle course champion and a month later he also competed at the U20 European Championships in Eskilstuna, Sweden. In the final he won the gold medal with a winning time of 8: 47.58 minutes. In 2016 Chiappinelli started at the U20 World Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland. In the final, he set a personal best in 8: 32.66 minutes, which meant fifth place at the finish. In the summer of 2017, again in Bydgoszcz, he took part in the U23 European Championships , where he won the gold medal. In August he failed as tenth of his heats at the World Championships in London to advance to the next round and ended up in 30th place in the total of all heats.
In June 2018, Chiappinelli competed at the Mediterranean Games in Tarragona, Spain, where he won the bronze medal. He won the same medal two months later at the European Championships in Berlin and celebrated his greatest sporting success to date. A year later he retired at the World Championships in Doha as eighth of his heat. He had previously set his best performance of 8: 24.26 minutes in Rome in June. In December he finished fifth in the U23 race of the European Cross Country Championships in Lisbon.
