final

August 9, 2018, 8:15 p.m. CEST

The top favorites were the two athletes who had finished first and second at the last World Championships : World Champion Karsten Warholm from Norway and Vice World Champion Yasmani Copello, the defending champion from Turkey. The semifinals indicated that the performance density was high and the competitors for the fight for the other top positions were close together. The Pole Patryk Dobek had the second fastest time there after Warholm, Rasmus Mägi from Estonia was third fastest, the French Ludvy Vaillant followed just behind at the same time as Copello. Timofei Tschaly, who started under a neutral flag, also stayed under 49 seconds.

The race turned into the expected duel in the end. Karsten Warholm prevailed with a new U23 European record in 47.64 s. This time also represented a new Norwegian national record. Yasmani Copello was seventeen hundredths of a second behind the Norwegian vice European champion and thus also remained below the 48-second mark. He also set a new national record with his performance. The level behind these two athletes was also high. Irishman Thomas Barr was a surprising third in 48.31 seconds. Ludvy Vaillant only missed bronze by a little more than a tenth of a second. Patryk Dobek came in fifth ahead of Rasmus Mägi. The Spaniard Sergio Fernández finished seventh, Timofei Tschaly finished eighth.
