Records
Existing records
World record | 49.2 s | Glenn Davis | OS Rome , Italy | 2nd September 1960 |
European record | 49.9 s | Helmut Janz | ||
Championship record | 50.5 s | Anatoly Julin | EM Bern , Switzerland | August 29, 1954 |
Comment on the European record: Salvatore Morale is named
in some sources as the European record holder with 49.7 s, achieved in a race over 440 yards on October 15, 1961 in Rome . This time is, however, a value for the 400-meter distance that has been downscaled from his winning time of 50.1 s. Thus this achievement was not recognizable.
Record improvements
European champion Salvatore Morale improved the EM record at these European championships twice:
- 50.0 s - 1st semifinals, September 13
- 49.2 s - final, September 14th
With his winning time, Morale equalized the existing world record.
