Helmut Janz

Helmut Janz (born April 11, 1934 in Gladbeck ; † November 8, 2000 in Neu-Ulm-Pfuhl ) was a German athlete .

biography

Helmut Janz, who lived with his wife Marga in Neu-Ulm-Pfuhl, initially belonged to the Rot-Weiß Oberhausen sports club and moved to VfL Gladbeck in 1958 . When he competed, he was 1.78 m tall and weighed 67 kg.

The Olympic participant - starting for the Federal Republic - was successful in the 400-meter hurdles in the late 1950s / early 1960s . He was German champion in this discipline seven times in a row (1957–1963). At the European Championships in 1962 , he won the bronze medal in 50.3 s. At the European Championships in 1958 he was eliminated in the interim. At the 1960 Olympic Games , he reached fourth place and set a European record when he ran for 49.9 seconds in Rome on September 2, 1960 .

For his athletic achievements he was honored on December 9, 1962 by being awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf. In 1963 he was awarded the Rudolf Harbig Memorial Prize.

In 1994 he retired from professional life, but was then still active as an athletics trainer and youth football coach. At an advanced age, he also took off the sports badge every year.
