The VfL Gladbeck 1921 e. V. is a sports club from Gladbeck , with (as of November 23, 2018) 3,400 members, it is one of the largest clubs in Gladbeck and the surrounding area. The 12 departments of the association offer u. a. sports badminton , women's soccer , funrunner , handball , athletics , cycling , swimming , tennis , volleyball and water polo . In addition to the competition-oriented team sport , a major focus of VfL is on popular sport .

Handball department

The handball department of VfL Gladbeck enjoys a considerable status in Gladbeck with its supraregional successes. From 2004 VfL played in the handball regional league West, from which he was relegated in 2009. In the 2011/2012 season, VfL rose again and plays in the third division. VfL took in the season 2005/06 and 2006/07 at the DHB Cup in part, but was eliminated in the first Main Round in both cases.

VfL Gladbeck plays its home games in the Riesener sports hall in Gladbeck.

Well-known former players

Athletics Department

Three athletes and one athlete from VfL Gladbeck started at international events for Germany. In 1954 Marlene Biedermann won the first German indoor championship in the shot put, at the European championships in 1954 she finished seventh. Helmut Janz won seven German championship titles in the 400-meter hurdles from 1957 to 1963; the 1960 Olympic gold medalist won bronze at the European Championships in 1962 . Gisela Kinzel began her career at VfL Gladbeck under her maiden name Gottwald and made it to the season finals of the World Championships in Helsinki in 1983 , before leaving the club for Paderborn after her marriage. From 1989 to 1993, the long and three jumper Claudia Gerhardt was at VfL Gladbeck, who achieved sixth place at the 1992 European Indoor Championships as the best placement during this time.
