Bruno Galliker

Bruno Galliker (born December 29, 1931 in Emmenbrücke ; † May 27, 2020 in Zurich ) was a Swiss athlete who won two medals at European championships. After his sports career, he was a sports reporter for Swiss radio.

biography

After an apprenticeship as a banker, Bruno Galliker came to athletics at the age of 23. He started for the BTV Luzern until 1957, after moving to Zurich he switched to the athletics department of TV Unterstrass.

In the semifinals of the 1958 European Championships in Stockholm , Galliker set a new Swiss record in the 400-meter hurdles with 51.8 seconds and qualified for the finals in second place behind Yuri Litujew from the Soviet Union. In the final he was able to set his record and won bronze behind Litujew and the Norwegian Per-Owe Trollsås . With the Swiss 4 x 400 meter relay , Galliker could not qualify for the final.

At the Olympic Games in Rome in 1960 , Galliker won his preliminary run with 51.0 s, in the semifinals he was able to qualify for the final with a hundredth of a second ahead of Salvatore Morale . In the final, he finished sixth and last with 51.0 seconds. Thanks to this achievement, he was voted Swiss Sportsman of the Year .

In 1962 Galliker retired in the semifinals of the 400-meter hurdles of the European Championships in Belgrade with 51.3 s. The Swiss 4 x 400 meter relay qualified as third for the final. In the final, the season won the bronze medal with a new national record of 3: 07.0 min with the cast of Bruno Galliker, Marius Theiler , Hansruedi Bruder and Jean-Louis Descloux . He won a total of eight Swiss championship titles.

After finishing his active career as a track and field athlete, Bruno Galliker worked as a sports reporter and was one of the best-known voices on German-speaking Swiss radio for several decades.

He died at the age of 88 after a self-accident in Zurich.
