The men's 400-meter hurdles at the European Athletics Championships in 1969 was held on September 16 and 18, 1969 in the Karaiskakis Stadium in Athens .
In this competition there were two medals for Great Britain, silver and bronze. European champion was the Soviet Olympic fifth from 1968 Vyacheslav Skomorochow . He won John Sherwood before the 1968 Olympic third . Bronze went to Andrew Todd.

Preliminary round

With only sixteen runners, the number of participants was so small that three preliminary rounds in the preliminary round without another semi-final were enough to determine the eight finalists. The first two athletes per run - highlighted in light blue - as well as the two fastest runners - highlighted in light green - qualified for the final.
