The men's decathlon at the European Athletics Championships in 1969 was held on September 17 and 18, 1969 in Athens' Karaiskakis Stadium .
In this competition there was a double victory for the decathletes of the GDR. European champion was Joachim Kirst . He won ahead of Herbert Wessel . Bronze went to Viktor Chelnokov from the USSR.

European champion Joachim Kirst improved the existing EM record at these European championships on 17/18. September at 8041 P according to the then valid rating from 1964 - today's rating from 1985: 7910 P.
execution
The decathlon was carried out according to the same rules as today. The ten disciplines took place over two days.
- Day 1: September 17th - 100 m / long jump / shot put / high jump / 400 m
- Day 2: September 18th - 110 m hurdles / discus throw / pole vault / javelin throw / 1500 m
A new point table from 1964 was used for scoring.

values : For orientation and classification of the performance, the points achieved in 1985 according to the current evaluation system are also listed. After that, there would have been shifts in the ranks from thirteenth. But these comparisons are only indicative, because the different standards of the time must apply as a basis.
