Herbert Wessel (born March 12, 1944 in Königsberg ) is a German athlete and Olympic participant who - starting for the GDR - won the silver medal in the decathlon at the European Championships in 1969 (7828 points = 7683 points according to the 1985 table: 10.9 s - 7.37 m - 14.21 m - 1.98 m - 49.6 s - 15.4 s - 40.98 m - 4.60 m - 54.16 m - 4: 37.0 min).

At the 1968 Olympic Games , he gave up after the first day of competition due to an injury.

At the European Championships in 1971 , he came ninth (7583 points = 7520 points according to the 1985 table: 11.17 s - 7.12 m - 14.70 m - 1.86 m - 49.8 s - 15.46 s - 44.52 m - 4.60 m - 55.70 m - 4: 57.8 min)

Herbert Wessel was East German decathlon champion in 1968 and 1971, and in 1969 and 1970 he was second behind Rüdiger Demmig . He belonged to the ASK Potsdam. During his competition time he was 1.81 m tall and weighed 84 kg.
