The men's decathlon at the 1974 European Athletics Championships was held on September 1 and 2, 1974 in the Olympic Stadium in Rome .
European champion was Ryszard Skowronek from Poland . He won in front of the French Yves Leroy. Bronze went to the German decathlete Guido Kratschmer .

European champion Ryszard Skowronek improved the EM record on 5th / 6th. September to 8207 points after the then valid rating from 1964 - today's rating from 1985: 8230 pts.
execution
The decathlon was carried out according to the same rules as today. The ten disciplines took place over two days.
- Day 1: September 6th - 100 m / long jump / shot put / high jump / 400 m
- Day 2: September 7th - 110 m hurdles / discus throw / pole vault / javelin throw / 1500 m
The scoring was based on the points table from 1964.

Preliminary remarks on the point
values : For orientation and classification of the performance, the points achieved in 1985 according to the current evaluation system are also listed. After that, there would only have been one change in the result: the athletes on ranks thirteen and fourteen would have had to swap places. But these comparisons are only indicative, because the different standards of the time must apply as a basis.
