The men's decathlon at the 1982 European Athletics Championships was held on September 7th and 8th, 1982 in the Olympic Stadium in Athens .
It was won by the British Vice European Champion from 1978 and Olympic Champion from 1980 Daley Thompson , who set a new world record. He won ahead of the previous world record holder Jürgen Hingsen from the Federal Republic of Germany. As in 1978, bronze went to the GDR athlete Siegfried Stark .

Record improvement
European champion Daley Thompson improved the championship record on 7/8. September to 8774 points after the then valid rating from 1964 - today's rating from 1985: 8743 P - and at the same time set a new world record.
execution
The decathlon was carried out according to the same rules as today. The ten disciplines took place over two days.
- Day 1: September 7th - 100 m / long jump / shot put / high jump / 400 m
- Day 2: September 8th - 110 m hurdles / discus throw / pole vault / javelin throw / 1500 m
The scoring was based on the points table from 1964.

Preliminary remarks on the point
values : For orientation and classification of the performance, the points achieved in 1985 according to the current evaluation system are also listed. After that there would have been no postponements at these European championships. These comparisons are only indicative, however, because the different standards of the time must apply as a basis. At the subsequent European Championships, the current rating was used.

Vice European champion Jürgen Hingsen went into his first duel with Daley Thompson as the world record holder - this duel was repeated with the same outcome at the 1983 World Championships and the 1984 Olympic Games
Torsten Voss gave up the competition after the 110 meter hurdles - in 1987 he was world champion and in 1988 Olympic runner-up, later he won numerous medals in bobsleigh
