The men's 800-meter run at the 1982 European Athletics Championships was held from September 6th to 8th, 1982 in the Olympic Stadium in Athens .

The German runner Hans-Peter Ferner was surprisingly European champion . He won ahead of the British 1500 meter Olympic champion from 1980 and world record holder Sebastian Coe , who was also Olympic runner-up over 800 meters in 1980 and third at the European Championship in 1978 . Bronze went to the Finn Jorma Härkönen .
