The men's 800-meter run at the European Athletics Championships in 1966 was held from September 2nd to 4th, 1966 in Budapest's Népstadion .

With silver and bronze there were two medals for German middle distance athletes . European champion was Manfred Matuschewski from the GDR. He won in front of the European record holder Franz-Josef Kemper . Bronze went to the 1,500 meter European champion Bodo Tümmler .

Jürgen May (here in a leading position) was eliminated in seventh place in his semi-final run - he later fled to Germany and was banned for a long time
