Francesco Arese

Francesco Arese (born April 13, 1944 in Centallo ) is a former Italian athlete , entrepreneur and sports official (President of the Italian Athletics Federation ). With a height of 1.86 m, his competition weight was 65 kg.

Sports career

Francesco Arese made his international debut at the 1966 European Championships in Budapest. Both over 800 meters and over 1500 meters he was eliminated in the preliminary run. At the Olympic Games in Mexico City in 1968 , Arese reached the semifinals over 1500 meters and was there seventh in his run, the first six reached the final. The following year Arese was in the final at the European Championships in Athens in 1969 . He finished eighth in 3: 42.2 minutes, over two seconds behind the winner of the bronze medal, Henryk Szordykowski from Poland.

Arese achieved his greatest success at the European Championships in Helsinki in 1971 . He won the title in 3: 38.4 minutes ahead of Szordykowski and Brendan Foster from Britain . In Munich at the 1972 Olympic Games , he was eliminated in the semifinals, like four years earlier.

Arese won the Italian championship title in the 800-meter run in 1968, 1969, 1972 and 1973, in 1966, 1967, 1968 and 1970 he won the 1500 meters, in 1971 he won the 5000 meters. At the indoor championships he was twice successful, in 1970 over 3000 meters and 1972 over 1500 meters.

In 2012 he was inducted into the FIDAL Hall of Fame of Italian Athletics.

Professional career

Arese studied economics (including 1970 student world champion over 1500 m), started for the FIAT sports club in Turin, trained with Marcello Pagani. After graduating, he was hired by Asics , whose shoes he last walked in. In this Japanese company, he worked his way up from sales representative to head of Asics Italia to head of Asics Europe , where he also remained head of Asics Italia from 1982 to 2013. During this time, Asics became a major sponsor of athletics . From 2005 to 2012 he was president of the Federazione Italiana di Atletica Leggera for two terms and at the same time a member of the board of the IAAF . However, after his age-related retirement with Asics, Arese did not remain idle for long. Together with his son Emanuele Arese, in 2014 he bought the majority of the Karhu holding, the oldest Finnish sports shoe brand.
