Bodo Tümmler (born December 8, 1943 in Thorn , West Prussia ) is a former German middle-distance runner who started for the Federal Republic of Germany .

Sports career

Bodo Tümmler grew up in West Berlin after fleeing West Prussia due to the war. He started for SC Charlottenburg Berlin and trained with Wolfgang Meller . In his active time he was 1.88 m tall and 71 kg heavy.

In the mid-1960s to the early 1970s he was v. a. successful in the 1500 meter run . Tümmler was German champion over 1500 meters from 1965 to 1969, 1971 and 1972 as well as 1964 and 1965 both in the forest run and with the 3 x 1000 meter relay of SC Charlottenburg. In 1965 he won another championship title over 1500 meters in the hall. He won his fifteenth and final championship title in 1972 with the 4 x 800 meter relay .

Bottlenose dolphins were also very successful internationally. In 1965 he became student world champion over 1500 meters and won over this distance as an outsider at the first European Athletics Cup in 3: 47.4 minutes ahead of the French Jean Wadoux and Jürgen May , GDR .

At the European Athletics Championships in Budapest in 1966 , he won over 1500 meters in 3: 41.9 minutes ahead of the French European record holder Michel Jazy and the Westphalian Harald Norpoth . In addition, Tümmler came third here over 800 meters in 1: 46.3 minutes behind Manfred Matuschewski , GDR and European record holder Franz-Josef Kemper .

In 1967 Tümmler was again student world champion over 1500 meters and came in 3: 40.5 min three tenths of a second behind Manfred Matuschewski in the European Cup in second place.

His greatest success was the bronze medal in the 1,500 meter run at the 1968 Olympic Games in the mountain air of Mexico City in 3: 39.0 minutes behind the Kenyan Kipchoge Keino and the world record holder Jim Ryun , USA . For this he was awarded the silver bay leaf .

In 1969 Tümmler took third place in the continental battle that was held in Stuttgart at the time , but then had to forego another chance for a medal due to the boycott of the European championships by the German athletes. He then struggled with knee problems and was unable to train for a long time, so he had to skip the 1970 season. In 1971 he slowly regained a foothold in the competition program, but was unable to continue one of his previous classes. At the Olympic Games in 1972 , he was eliminated in the 1500-meter intermediate run. In 1973 he completed a marathon in 2:34:73 h.

Life

After his sports career, Tümmler became a teacher of biology and sports. First he worked at the Wald-Oberschule in Berlin-Eichkamp and worked until his retirement in 2008 as director of studies at the Schadow-Gymnasium in Berlin-Zehlendorf . He is the father of a daughter.

He remained connected to the sport even after his career ended. At the Berlin Marathon he took over the management of the refreshment point at km 35 on the "Wild Boar" - Horst Milde , organizer / founder of this marathon and friend from common medium distance times, played an essential role. Tümmler made history in the international marathon world with his banner “Let the pig out from here” stretched across the street.
