Brian Hewson

Brian Hewson ( Brian Stanford Hewson; born April 4, 1933 in Croydon ) is a former British middle-distance runner .

In 1954, starting for England , he won silver at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Vancouver on August 3, over 880 yards in 1: 51.2 minutes behind his compatriot Derek Johnson . At the end of August, at the European Championships in Bern , Hewson won his pre-run over 800 meters in 1: 50.2 minutes, but then retired in the semifinals in 1: 51.2 minutes. At the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956 , he finished fifth in the 1,500-meter run in 3: 42.6 minutes .

In 1958 he won the championship of the British Amateur Athletic Association over 880 yards in front of his compatriot Mike Rawson and the Australian Herb Elliott . At the end of July at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Cardiff , Elliott won in 1: 49.32 minutes ahead of Hewson in 1: 49.47 minutes and Rawson in 1: 50.94 minutes. Elliott also won over the 1 mile , in this race Hewson finished eighth, almost twelve seconds behind. At the European Championships in Stockholm in mid-August, Hewson only started over 1500 meters. In the run-up he finished second behind the Finn Olavi Vuorisalo , but improved the British record with 3: 41.1 minutes. The finale started a little slower. On the home straight, Hewson sprinted past the entire field and won in 3: 41.9 minutes ahead of Swede Dan Waern and Irish rider Ron Delany . Ten days after winning the title, Hewson competed again over the 1 mile against Herb Elliott in London. Elliott won, but Hewson ran second with a personal best of 3: 58.9 minutes. On September 27, 1958, Hewson was the final runner in the English 4-by-1-mile relay, which set a world record in 16: 30.6 minutes.

In 1960 he took part again in the Olympic Games in Rome , but was eliminated in the 800 meter run.

Brian Hewson is 1.83 m tall and weighed 63 kg during his playing days.
